With only three points separating the four teams in Group ‘B’ of the UEFA Champions League, there is absolutely everything to play for when Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk meet at San Siro for their group finale. Inter are bottom of the group standings with five points, while Shakhtar are second with seven points level with the third-placed Real Madrid but only one point behind the leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.
Inter will need a win in this match and need a result in the other match between Madrid and Monchengladbach to qualify for the next round. Inter will finish fourth if they do not win. Shakhtar will go through with a win or if both games are drawn. They will win the group with a win, provided Monchengladbach do not win. Shakhtar will finish fourth if they lose this match and Madrid avoid defeat against Monchengladbach.
Inter Milan defeated Bologna 3-1 over the weekend in Serie A to make it three wins in a row. Crucially, they have scored three goals in each of those wins to give their confidence a huge lift. That is very much required as Inter need a lift in their Champions League fortunes. Inter started with two draws and two losses, but a 3-2 win at Monchengladbach in the last round gave them a chance to progress. However, recent record at home in the competition has been poor with Inter winning only once in their last seven Champions League home matches, losing two and drawing four.
Shakhtar have been the giant killers of the group defeating Madrid home and away in the campaign. They defeated the Spanish giants 3-2 away and 2-0 home, but apart from those wins, they haven’t really impressed. Shakhtar held Inter to a goalless draw at home, but were thumped 10-0 on aggregate home and away by Monchengladbach. A draw won’t be enough for Shakhtar as they will need a draw from the other game in that case.
