It will be a straight shootout for a place in the round of 16 from Group ‘A’ of the UEFA Champions League when Atletico Madrid travel to FC Salzburg in the group finale. Atletico are second in the group standings with six points, while Atletico are third with four points and just one ahead of the bottom-placed Lokomotiv Moscow.
Salzburg will go through to the next round if they win this match against Atletico. They will finish in third place if they do not win, provided Lokomotiv do not beat Bayern – which looks a near-certain result. Atletico, on the other hand, will go through if they avoid losing to Salzburg. However, if they lose here, Atletico will go into the Europa League round of 32 by finishing in third place.
Salzburg lost 1-0 to Admira in the domestic league match which made it four losses in their last seven competitive matches winning only twice. Salzburg have won at Lokomotiv Moscow 3-1 in their last Champions League match stopping their three-match losing run. After starting the campaign with a 2-2 draw, Salzburg went on a losing spree each time conceding at least three goals. The concern for Salzburg is that they haven’t won back to back Champions League games in their history.
Atletico have a great record of qualifying for the Champions League knockouts under Simeone. The visitors travel here on the back of a 2-0 win over Real Valladolid making it a ten-match unbeaten run in all competitions, winning seven and drawing three. In the Champions League, Atletico have remained unbeaten in their last four matches winning one and drawing their last three in a row. The worry for Simeone will be about his side’s poor away form – Atletico haven’t won away from home in the competition since defeating Lokomotiv Moscow in October 2019 – losing five and drawing one since then.
