The second matchday in the UEFA Champions League sees a Group E clash between the Italian and Croatian champions when AC Milan hosts Dinamo Zagreb at the San Siro. Milan has experienced a fairly strong start to the 2022/23 campaign with a 4-2-0 record in the league as they seek to defend last season’s Scudetto title. They will, however, be desperate for the three points in this one after drawing 1-1 away from home against RB Salzburg to kick off the Champions League group stages. The visiting Dinamo have started the new season very strongly as they attempt to secure their sixth consecutive league title and 17th in the past 18 seasons. The Blues have a combined record of 13-3-1 on the season in all competitions and were able to follow up their terrific 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Champions League group stage with a 1-0 away victory against Gorica in their last outing thanks to a stoppage time winner.
Despite starting the current season with some high-scoring home encounters including a huge 3-2 win in the Derby della Madonnina over rivals Inter and a 4-2 win over Udinese, Milan typically have seen lower scoring matches at home under manager Stefano Pioli. The Rossoneri scored 41 away goals in the Serie A last season compared to just 28 at home while also conceding 19 away and 12 at home. The results saw Milan’s home matches average just 2.11 total match goals at the San Siro compared to 3.16 away from home. Dinamo Zagreb has seen the opposite hold true for them this season and last season to an extent. The 23-time league champions have been scoring for fun on home soil so far this campaign, netting 30 goals and conceding 12 in nine matches while for an average total of 4.7 goals per match. Away from home has seen a much more cautious approach by Ante Čačić’s men who have scored just 11 goals while conceding five in six matches for an average of 2.7 total goals per away match.
