In the new Champions League format, one of the biggest games on Match Day 1 features Milan at home to Liverpool. Two teams that have in the past conquered Europe should serve an entertaining clash. Read on for our prediction.
Two years after the famous Istanbul 2005 night, Milan got their revenge against Liverpool in the Champions League final. Things have gone downhill for the Italian giants since, and they haven't added another European title to their fold.
It has particularly been bad for them when up against English teams. Milan managed just three wins in 21 matches against Premier League sides after that 2007 Champions League final. Home and away defeats to Liverpool in 2021/22 confirmed the low Milan have hit.
Here, they will be looking to build on their 4-0 win against Venezia on Saturday.
While Milan are coming off a win, Liverpool suffered a shock loss at home to Nottingham Forest. Callum Hudson-Odoi’s strike condemned Liverpool to a 1-0 loss, their first defeat of the season. It also ended their perfect run in three season-opening matches, the Reds having kept clean sheets in all.
After featuring in the Europa League last season, Liverpool will be back in the Champions League with high hopes. Their exit from Europe in 2023/24 was conjured by an Italian team – Atalanta. New manager Arne Slot will be keen to avoid dropping points here.
He will be encouraged by the fact Liverpool won the Italian leg, making it four wins in five visits to Italy. Another good sign will be Luis Diaz’s form. The Colombian netted in Liverpool’s opening games in Europe in the last two seasons.
Italian giants Milan had a slow start to the season but picked up after the international break. They are coming from a comfortable win, though it was against a weak opponent who also had a player sent off. Against Liverpool the hosts will be severely tested and in their form against English sides, this will be a difficult game.
The visitors, on their part, have done well in recent visits to Italy and will be encouraged by their form this season. There’s also an urge to bounce back after losing their last game. Our prediction for Milan v Liverpool is for Liverpool to win.
