Algeria did not have the best of starts to their title defence at the 2021 AFCON competition, drawing 0-0 with Sierra Leone in Group E. They will be out to rectify matters when they take on Equatorial Guinea on Match Day 2. The North Africans will still go to this game as favorites and after wasting a number of chances against Sierra Leone, they’ll want to settle faster here. They take to this game a lengthy unbeaten run and in their last three matches, they have kept clean sheets, suggesting a very strong team in defence. They have the quality in attack, with some of the best players at this competition, and it is no wonder they’ve scored two or more in eight of their last 10 matches. The current holders, Algeria, have the best run at AFCON, with nine unbeaten matches, six of them wins and they have only failed to score once. In six of their last eight AFCON matches, Algeria have led at half time.
Equatorial Guinea are just returning to the AFCON finals for the first time since 2015, when they finished fourth. They lost their opening game against Ivory Coast and one thing that will be a big concern for them is the low return in attack. They haven’t scored more than a goal in their last four matches and in the last 10, they’ve managed in just one game. They did register some good results in their last 10 matches though, winning five of the last 10 games. Among the teams they beat were Zambia and Tunisia, and Equatorial Guinea will feel they can size up against Algeria. While they haven’t been scoring a lot of goals, they have only failed to score twice in the last 10 matches. In their last three AFCON matches though, Equatorial Guinea have failed to score and they’ll need to be at their best to rattle Algeria.
Algeria are expected to be at their best here, after the rather shock result against Sierra Leone. A few changes are expected in the team but with their AFCON impetus we expect Algeria to get to their best here. Equatorial Guinea have struggled a bit in attack and after their dismal showing against Ivory Coast, they will need massive improvement to get a positive result here. Algeria are expected to start strong with a view to settle in the game early, so we will back them to lead at half time.
