Visiting Arsenal will look to solidify their top four position when they head to Villa Park to take on a resurgent Aston Villa side that has moved into the top half of the table. Despite suffering a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Liverpool in their last fixture, Arsenal are still in good shape for a top four finish this campaign which would be seen as a huge success. The Gunners currently hold the fourth spot in the Premier League table with a one point lead over fifth place Manchester United and a three point lead over sixth place West Ham while still having two games in hand. However, this certainly won’t be an easy fixture for Mikel Arteta’s side as Aston Villa have been stringing together some good results and are gaining consistency under Steven Gerrard. Villa currently sit ninth in the table with 36 points and are coming off a 2-1 loss to West Ham - a result which snapped a three match winning streak.
Arsenal will surely be disappointed by the loss to Liverpool after the club had been in such good form, winning five straight matches to surge up the standings. It’s been a bit of a recurring trend for the North London side over recent years to falter in important fixtures against the big clubs, especially Liverpool who have seemingly had their number. However, the Gunners have fared much better against the second and third tier clubs, in part evidenced by their recent five match run where they outscored their opponents 10-4 en route to 15 points. Villa will be tricky opponents as the positive effect that Gerrard has had on the club cannot be denied. The Liverpool legend has moved the Claret and Blues up into the top half since taking over the club when they were languishing near the relegation zone in 16th place. Ultimately, the hosts poor recent home form could cost them here against an Arsenal team that have been building consistency away from home with a string of good results.
