Aston Villa’s busy season continues with a midweek game at home to German champions Bayern Munich. The Villans welcome the Bavarians in a repeat of the 1982 Champions League final. Here’s our prediction for the match.
Heading into this game, Aston Villa’s weekend was spoiled by a late concession against Ipswich Town, which saw the game end 2-2. That marked the end of a four-game winning run for Villa, who started this campaign by beating Young Boys 3-0.
That win away in Switzerland happens to be Villa’s only clean sheet in the last five matches. All their last five games produced over 2.5 goals with Villa scoring three times in three of them. Twice in those five matches, Aston Villa conceded more than a goal.
Bayern Munich’s winning run was also halted over the weekend as they played host to reigning Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen. This was not only the first time they failed to win in the season but also the first they were limited to scoring just once.
For a side that had scored at least five goals in the three earlier matches, Bayern were left frustrated. Their attacking superiority has been laced with defensive solidity but Bayern have struggled a bit to keep clean sheets.
They did rise from defensive concerns on Match Day 1 to beat Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in the biggest win of the opening round. Here they face a side that won the first six home matches in Europa last season and a team capable of frustrating them.
Aston Villa are coming into this game on a fine scoring run and will be looking to shock Bayern, who start this as favorites. This season Villa failed to score just once and in seven of eight matches they scored more than one goal.
Bayern Munich will want to do better defensively facing such a team. The Germans have two clean sheets in their last six matches and have had trouble even when dominating. Our prediction for Aston Villa v Bayern Munich is for both teams to score.
