The first instalment of the Madrid derby will take place at the Wanda Metropolitano this Sunday. Atletico Madrid will hope playing at home lifts them against their more successful rivals, Real Madrid. Follow on for our prediction of this match.
Both these Madrid sides are playing catchup to Barcelona. Hosts Atletico are a distant third, six points behind the league leaders. Last season Atleti dominated this fixture, winning two of the four meetings.
In the corresponding one, they beat Real Madrid 3-1. A 4-2 win in the Copa Del Rey would follow before a 1-1 draw in the league. Coming into this game unbeaten in eight league games, Atletico will be confident of a victory at home.
Julian Alvarez’s stoppage time goal saw them beat Celta Vigo 1-0 in their last match.
Real Madrid’s only win in four matches against Atletico last season was in the Super Cup. They edged Diego Simeone’s side 5-3 in a match that went into extra time after a 3-3 draw at 90 minutes.
In the last three league meetings between them, Real Madrid are winless, and this is among the issues they’ll want to address on Sunday. Real Madrid have played nine matches this season, and look more solid now than when they started.
Carlo Ancelotti has seen the team through five straight wins ahead of this game. The latest of those was their 3-2 victory at home to Alaves.
As good as Real are, they are struggling defensively. Last time out they conceded twice in the final five minutes and this could come back to bite.
These teams faced off four times last season and a majority of their matches, as expected, were high-scoring. There’s never holding back in the Madrid derby and we expect another fierce one on Sunday going by the teams’ recent form.
Both teams are doing well in attack and will carry that to this game. For the neutrals, the guarantee of goals means there will be great entertainment. Our prediction for Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid is for both teams to score.
