Euro 2024 dark horses Austria topped Group B and the reward for their exploits is a round of 16 game against Turkey. Heading into this Tuesday game, Austria will be hoping to reach the European Championship quarter-finals for the first time ever. In the last edition, they almost got there, but were beaten in extra time by eventual winners Italy. Back-to-back wins ahead of this fixture presents their best ever run at the Euros. They beat the Netherlands 3-2 in their last outing for only their fourth win in 13 European Championship matches. While they don’t have the Euro pedigree, Austria have curved themselves as one of the toughest teams to face in recent times. They come here on a run of just two losses in the last 19 matches. Ralf Rangnick’s team has managed 14 wins in that run of 19 matches. They are, however, struggling defensively, without a clean sheet in any of their last six matches.
Two wins in Group F had Turkey finish second in the group, securing a knockout berth for the first time since 2008. Finishing second meant they avoided a clash against tournament favorites Spain. A late goal from Cenk Tosun is all they have to thank, after their 2-1 win over Czech in their third group game. Manager Vincenzo Montella will now hope for some consistency, his team having managed just two wins in their last eight matches. In the last nine matches, Turkey have registered just one clean sheet, which doesn’t paint them really well ahead of this game. The last time they faced Austria, in March this year, Turkey suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat. Fortunately, that was just a friendly game. Turkey haven't lost to Austria competitively in the last five meetings, winning four of those. They’ve however had no clean sheet in the last three matches against Austria.
After topping a group that had France and the Netherlands, Austria will feel confident about this game. Competitively, they haven't done superbly against Turkey, but their form coming to this game is something else. Turkey have had a shaky run coming here and that may affect their morale. Among their recent losses was a 6-1 thumping by Austria. Our prediction for Austria v Turkey is for Austria to emerge winners.
