French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova couldn't have expected to have the success she's had in 2021. The eighth seed had never even made it into the US Open main draw. Now she takes on second seeded Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the semi-finals. September 2020 saw Krejcikova ranked 118th in the world. Her success had been in winning Grand Slam doubles titles but this year everything has changed. Only Ashleigh Barty has earned more ranking points than her as Krejcikova won titles in Strasbourg and then the French Open. This week has seen her defeat Astra Sharma, Christina McHale, Kamilla Rhakimova and ninth seeded Garbine Muguruza and without losing a set. Her only previous meeting with Sabalenka was in Linz last year with her opponent winning in three sets. A bet on over 21.5 games looks a winner.
Aryna Sabalenka is the highest seed left in the tournament but is yet to reach a Grand Slam final. It was only at Wimbledon this year that the Belarusian managed to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final. Now another looms if Krejcikova can be beaten. This year has seen her rise from 10th in the rankings to second but even winning the US Open won't see her go first above Ashleigh Barty. A win here would take her above her opponent into second place in the WTA Race. Sabalenka is looking to win her second title of the year after success in the Madrid Open. This tournament has seen wins over Nina Stojanovic, Tamara Zidansek, Danielle Collins and Elise Mertens. Only Stojanovic has taken a set off her. Sabalenka looks in good form and that first Grand Slam title can't be far away. Back her to win this match.
