It’s all change at Swansea with Steve Cooper no longer in charge and top-scorer Andre Ayew recently departed for Qatar. Cooper and the Swans parted ways via mutual consent after successive play-off appearances including a play-off final defeat to Brentford back in May. MK Dons head coach Russel Martin was appointed on Monday and has less than a week to prepare his new side for their opening game away at Blackburn Rovers. It could be a season of regression at Swansea after back-to-back top-six finishes. These sides drew 1-1 at Ewood Park back in March and four of the last five meetings have ended in a tie. Only Norwich and Brentford accumulated more points on the road than Swansea did with 38 last season but they conceded on average one goal per game on their travels.
Rovers' fans perhaps, would long for change as frustration grows at the club amongst supporters with the stagnant progression of the team under current ownership and manager Tony Mowbray. Adam Armstrong is still a Blackburn player after a summer filled with rumours that he would leave the club and he will be hoping to contribute something similar to his 29-goal tally last term. Blackburn recorded the best goal difference for a side to finish in the bottom half of any football league table since 1958/59 such was their inability to win against better sides despite cruising against those around them. Mowbray led Blackburn to 11th in 2019/20, seven points off the play-offs but a 15th place finishes either side of that campaign leaves the experienced manager in hot water and with fans growing increasingly frustrated with how the club is being run, it could be a long season at Ewood Park.
