By Cameroon’s standards, finishing third in the 2021 AFCON was a low, but they have moved on and are currently in the hunt for a 2022 World Cup ticket. They are set to host Algeria in the first leg of the final round of qualifiers for Qatar 2022. Cameroon have a new management in place following the appointment of former defender Rigobert Song. This will be the coach’s first game in charge and he will bank not just on his team’s prowess, but also the fact that they will be playing at home. Cameroon head into this game gone unbeaten in their last 27 home matches in World Cup qualification. Of the 27 matches, they’ve won 23. The Indomitable Lions have four straight wins in World Cup qualification and heading into this game, they have three straight clean sheets. To get here, they beat favourites Ivory Coast in their final group game. Cameroon’s only concern going into this game will be Andre Ohana’s mental state after he was involved in a road accident.
Algeria will not have very fond memories returning to Cameroon. About two months ago they were here to defend their African crown; it ended badly as they were dethroned and eliminated at the group phase. They managed just one goal in the three matches, and exited having lost two of their three matches. It will be tougher for them, playing away to Cameroon and with a very poor run against Cameroon. Algeria are winless in five matches against Cameroon and have never kept a clean sheet when facing Cameroon. In the qualifiers for Russia 2018, these two met and Cameroon emerged 2-0 winners. Algeria will be keen to avoid another loss here and they are unbeaten in their last seven matches in World Cup qualification for a start. However, save for Burkina Faso, the teams they’ve met in the seven matches are not a match to the kind of opposition Cameroon will offer here. Away from home, Algeria haven’t done so well in World Cup qualification; they have four losses and two wins in the last seven. In 10 away matches in this competition, they have managed just three clean sheets.
Cameroon will be favourites here; playing at home and with a fine head to head record over Algeria. The hosts have done well in their home matches in these qualifiers. The same can’t be said of Algeria’s last seven away matches in the World Cup qualifiers - they’ve lost four. Go for Cameroon to win.
