Chile are in a tight spot as far as qualification to the 2022 World Cup is concerned. They go into their final qualification game in the CONMEBOL region, at home to Uruguay with their backs against the rope. With 19 points, in seventh place, this is a game they must win. Uruguay on the other hand have their place at Qatar 2022 booked, being fourth with 25 points. Chile are paying the price for a bad start to the qualifiers; they managed just one win in the opening 10 matches. They also don’t have a very good run heading into this game, and their fate is out of their hands. Chile have to win this game and hope that Colombia and Peru drop points, for them to get to the playoff spot. An ageing squad has been listed as the major problem for Chile and no matter how this goes, that is an area the management will have to look into. At least 11 players in the current team, most of them starters, are above 30. Chile are coming from a 4-0 loss to Brazil, a stark reminder of how low they’ve sunk but they’ll be more worried by the fact that they’ve lost three of the last four World Cup qualifiers, and have just one win over Uruguay in the last five meetings. At home, they have two straight losses in World Cup qualification.
Uruguay go into this game without any pressure whatsoever; their place at Qatar 2022 is secure as they can’t finish any lower than fourth. They have a four-point cushion thanks to a fine run in their recent matches that has seen them win each of the last three matches. Uruguay have been poor in defence though, conceding 22 goals in the course of their 17 matches so far. In their last three matches though, they have kept two clean sheets. Uruguay haven't been scoring a lot; in the last nine matches in World Cup qualification, they’ve managed more than a goal in just one. They are unbeaten in their last three matches against Chile and here they will even have the comfort of playing their fringe players. Uruguay’s away form hasn’t been the best; they have one win in five away matches in World Cup qualification and in three of the last four, they’ve conceded three or more goals. The visitors have one clean sheet only in the last five away matches in World Cup qualification, and failed to score in two.
Uruguay have already qualified for Qatar 2022 and will be under no pressure here. On the other hand, this game means everything for Chile, even though qualification isn’t entirely in their control. They need a win here to be able to get to the playoff spot, if the two teams above them drop points. It is a tough scenario to be in but given the stakes, as well as Uruguay’s poor away run coupled with the fact that they’ve qualified, we will back Chile to win.
