Aston Villa and Club Brugge, giant killers in the past rounds of the Champions League are set to face off in the last 16. Belgian side Club Brugge will host the first leg of this tie and below we have the prediction.
Club Brugge booked their place here courtesy of home and away wins against Atalanta. A 3-1 win in Italy completed their 5-2 victory against last season’s Europa League winners.
The Belgians are, however, not coming into this game on a positive run. A 1-1 draw with Gent in their last match left them with a point from a possible six in the last two league matches. They’ve lost just once in seven Champions League matches though.
Aston Villa are keen to avoid a second defeat at Club Brugge this season. At the league phase they faced off in Belgium and Villa lost 1-0. Having finished in the top eight in the first stage, they didn’t have to go into the play-offs.
Now they resume in Europe, having warmed up for this game with a 2-0 win over Cardiff City in the FA Cup. Marco Asensio’s brace ensured they recovered from their 4-1 loss to Crystal Palace earlier.
It was also their first clean sheet in 11 matches, and Villa hope to build on it here.
Aston Villa and Club Brugge are facing off for the second time this season. In the league stage, Villa’s trip to Belgium ended in a 1-0 loss. Much has changed since and we expect the same to reflect in this game. The two sides haven't been great defensively, though they’ve been doing well in attack.
While Club Brugge scored in all their last 10 matches, they managed just one clean sheet in the process. Aston Villa have also had one clean sheet in 10, while scoring in eight. Going by these numbers, our prediction for Club Brugge v Aston Villa is for over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
