Cori Gauff has one last chance to win the US Open as a teenager. The 19-year-old sixth seed takes on second seeded Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday's final. Gauff is up to fifth place in the live rankings which is one position below her career high. That'll be beaten on Saturday if this final is won as she'll move up to third in the new list. This is only her second Grand Slam final but the first on a hard court. Her form on this surface has been good with three titles won in 2023. Most recently she has been the title winner in both Washington and Cincinatti. Gauff has beaten Sabalenka in three of their previous five meetings. However, the most recent one saw her lose 6-4 6-0 in this year's Indian Wells hard court tournament. Gauff has dropped three sets on her way to this final but all in the first four rounds. The last two have produced straight sets victories over Jelena Ostapenko and Karolina Muchova.
Aryna Sabalenka's dream of being the world number one has finally come true. The 25-year-old will take over at the top even if losing this final. Sabalenka is also top of the Live WTA Race and has also won three titles this year with two of them being on this surface. That includes the Australian Open (her first Grand Slam title) and the Indian Wells tournament. Sabalenka has reached at least the semi-finals in all four of this year's Grand Slam events. No sets were lost by her in the first five rounds of this US Open. Then she lost the first set in her semi-final against Madison Keys without winning a game. Two tie-breaks were needed to be won to take her into this final. This could be another close final and we go for Sabalenka to win the title.
