Costa Rica will be looking to slow Canada’s charge towards qualification for the 2022 World Cup when they host them in San Jose on Match Day 12 of the qualifiers. The hosts are placed fifth going into this game, with 16 points, nine behind Canada, who top the standings. Costa Rica are a point outside the playoff zone and as they seek to slow down Canada, they’ll also be aware of just how important a win here will be. They have three losses in their 11 matches so far, and among them was a 1-0 defeat by Canada, and they’ll be out to avenge. With three straight clean sheets and four matches unbeaten, they’ll feel confident enough for the job ahead. However, they have no win in the last four meetings with Canada and in the run up to this game, Costa Rica haven’t been scoring a lot of goals. In their last five matches they’ve failed to score in two, while they have managed more than a gal in just one of the last five matches. At home, Costa Rica are unbeaten in four matches and they have three straight wins ahead of this game but they’ve managed just one clean sheet in five.
Canada on the other hand, carry a fine run to this game; they have six straight wins and are unbeaten in 11 matches. In fact, in this round of the qualifiers, they are the only unbeaten side and going into this game they need just two points from the remaining three matches to secure their place in the 2022 World Cup. Canada’s only appearance at the FIFA World Cup was way back, in 1986 in Mexico but here they have a real chance of making it to the next. In their last six World Cup qualification matches, all of which they haven’t lost, Canada have managed four clean sheets. They have scored two or more goals in five of their last six World Cup qualification matches. The two leading scorers in the qualifiers are both Canadians, a reflection of their dominance in the qualifiers, in which Canada are also the best side defensively.
The pressure is on Costa Rica to win here. They have done well at home though and should be able to impose themselves in this game. Here though, they face the best team in the qualifiers and a side they haven’t really done well against. Canada have a good run ahead of this clash but their away form hasn’t been the best, and looking at Costa Rica’s home form, a draw looks possible here.
