A 5-1 home win over Panama has assured the USA of at least a place in the Inter-Confederations play-offs. They are second in their World Cup qualifying group and their final game is away in Costa Rica who are in fourth place. The Americans could yet win the group if they beat Costa Rica and leaders Canada lose in Panama. The most important job though is ensuring that they automatically qualify for the finals. Just a draw in Costa Rica will see them through and with a vastly superior goal difference it'd take an enormous defeat to see them drop to fourth. The USA would have clinched their place in Qatar a few games ago but for their poor away record. Six points have been earned from as many games but the only win came against bottom-of-the-table Honduras. The other five games have seen the Americans only score one goal and all five games have had under 2.5 goals scored in them.
Costa Rica are guaranteed a play-off position but could yet finish in the top three. They trail the USA and Mexico by three points but their goal difference is inferior to both those sides. The gap in goal difference between Costa Rica and Mexico is only four so that could be made up, it's 10 worse than the USA though. Mexico finish the group with a home game against sixth placed El Salvador and a point will guarantee them a trip to the finals. A 2-1 in El Salvador kept their automatic qualification hopes alive. Costa Rica can just go out and try to beat the Americans and score a few goals. It's looking like the play-offs for them though. Their only home loss in this group has been to Mexico but four of their six home qualifiers have seen under 2.5 goals scored and each of their four wins were by single-goal margins. Go for under 2.5 goals to be scored in this game.
