For the ninth time, Andrey Rublev attempts to win a Grand Slam quarter final. It's going to be a tough task in the US Open as he faces third seeded Daniil Medvedev in the last eight. Rublev is seeded eighth in the US Open and he's made it to his third Grand Slam quarter final of the year. That makes eight in total but each and every one (including three previous ones in New York) have all been lost. He's won two of his last three matches against Medvedev and those successes did come on a hard court which is the surface for this match. However, he trails his fellow Russian 5-2 in ATP Tour matches and their last match in Dubai this year saw him win just four games. To get to the last eight, Rublev has avoided meeting any seeded players. He's dropped sets in three of his four matches.
Daniil Medvedev won this title back in 2021, two years after being a losing finalist. A win here will take him into his third US Open semi-final, oh how jealous his opponent must be. This year has seen Medvedev win five tournaments, four of them on hard courts. He's played 41 hard court matches this year and has only lost five of them. The last round saw him lose the first set to Alex de Minaur but only seven games were lost in the next three sets. The only other set he's dropped was in the second round against Christophe O'Connell. He's had a great year on this surface and we go for him to get the win over his compatriot to set up a semi-final match against either Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev.
