Egypt and DR Congo have earned the tag of draw specialists ahead of their round of 16 meeting. The two nations are yet to win, or lose a game at the current competition. Egypt finished second in Group B after 2-2 draws with Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde. The nation with the most AFCON titles will look to rise to the occasion now after showing signs of struggling. They were however impacted by injuries to key players, including skipper Mohamed Salah and goalkeeper Mohamed el Shenawy. While Egypt have struggled to win matches at AFCON, their scoring form can’t be ignored. They have scored at least two goals in each of their last six matches. In their last 18 matches, Egypt haven't failed to score. At AFCON, each of their last seven matches produced a draw after 90 minutes. Past performance against DR Congo will be enough to give the Pharaohs confidence coming into this game. Egypt are unbeaten in six meetings with DR Congo, winning five.
DR Congo, like Egypt, posted straight draws in all their group stage matches, though with a lower goal return. They came from behind to draw Zambia and Morocco before playing out a 0-0 draw with Tanzania. These results just extended their run without a win to five matches, four of which ended in draws. DR Congo have lost just once, and also won once in their last 10 matches. Consistent with their low scoring returns at the group stage, Congo failed to score in half of their last 10 matches. The three group stage draws extended DR Congo’s winless run at AFCON to four matches. Their last at the 2019 edition had produced a 2-2 draw against Madagascar, who went on to win on penalties. DR Congo have won just twice in their last 10 AFCON matches.
These two sides are still searching for their opening wins at the 2023 AFCON even though they are at this stage. They drew all their group matches and most of their recent matches have followed that order. Egypt’s drawn matches at AFCON go past this edition and this is a result we also expect here. Our prediction for Egypt v DR Congo is for a draw at 90 minutes.
