The Three Lions are in action this weekend when England host group C winners Switzerland in an interesting matchup at Wembley in London. Both teams enjoyed successful World Cup qualifying campaigns and have already booked their tickets to Qatar. They’ll face off in a friendly here as each manager will be looking to keep the positive momentum going with the prestigious tournament right around the corner. England topped their qualifying group with an unbeaten record of eight wins and two draws while scoring an impressive 39 goals and conceding just three. Switzerland also finished undefeated, besting defending European champions Italy to finish top of the group with a record of five wins and three draws. England’s goal tally was boosted by their final matchday encounter with lowly San Marino as Gareth Southgate’s side went out there looking determined to claim the top scoring honors and ruthlessly tore apart the 210th ranked national team by a score of 10-0. Switzerland will, of course, be a much sterner test as Murat Yakin’s side have now only conceded once in their last six matches. The Schweizer Nati are coming off a 4-0 win against Bulgaria in their last fixture.
This is likely to be a close match with both teams in especially good defensive form. Switzerland conceded just twice in their eight qualifying matches and haven’t lost in regulation time since falling 3-0 to Italy in the European Championship group stage. England will have a chance to experiment with players as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James have both been withdrawn from the squad, opening the way for Walker-Peters is set to make his full England debut. The spotlight is likely to be on Jude Bellilngham who is set for his 11th cap and fourth start as the 18-year-old wonderkid looks to establish himself in the starting 11. Bellingham carries an abundance of expectation as the Borussia Dortmund starlet has been earmarked as a future national team captain and looks poised to be an instrumental part of Southgate’s midfield for years to come.
