Dutch champions Feyenoord will host Scottish champions Celtic in Group E as the two open their UEFA Champions League journeys. These two sides will be considered the lightweights in a group that also has Lazio and Atletico Madrid. Neither side can therefore afford a slip up here. Three wins on the bounce place Feyenoord on the right footing for this game at home. They haven't lost in their five matches after the loss to PSV in the Super Cup. Feyenoord thrashed Heerenveen 6-1 ahead of this game and will hope to carry this to the Celtic game. In each of their last three matches, the Dutch champions have scored five or more goals. However, they have no clean sheet in four straight games. In their six matches this season so far, they’ve managed just one clean sheet. They are unbeaten in three home matches, with two straight wins ahead of this one.
Like Feyenoord, Celtic are coming into this game on the back of a comfortable win domestically. They beat Dundee 3-0 in their last outing to continue with their recovery after a slow start to the season. After opening their season with two wins, Celtic suffered elimination from the League Cup. They then drew 0-0 with St Johnstone, but ahead of this game they have two straight wins. In their last three matches there has also been an improvement in defence; they’ve kept straight clean sheets. Celtic’s run in the Champions League is however not impressive. They haven't won any game in the competition in nine attempts. Last season they finished bottom of their group in the Champions League, with just two points.
Feyenoord are making a comeback to the Champions League after six years. They’ve featured in Europa League and Conference League so this will not be entirely new to them. They have a good run and playing at home will favor them too. Celtic haven't had a good run in the Champions League recently and they’ve also been shaky this season. Our prediction for Feyenoord v Celtic is for Feyenoord to win.
