Matchday 28 of the Bundesliga sees league leaders and defending champions Bayern Munich heading west to take on Freiburg as they look to tighten their grip on a 10th successive league crown. Bayern currently sit six points clear at the top of the pile on 63 points with rivals Borussia Dortmund trailing them in second. It’s vital that the Bavarians don’t look past their opponents today with their Champions League quarterfinal against Villareal taking place just four days after this one. Freiburg have been one of the Bundesliga’s surprise teams this season and find themselves fighting for a Champions League place as they currently sit fifth with 45 points - equal with fourth place RB Leipzig but trailing on goal differential. Freiburg’s last competitive match was a 0-0 away draw against Greuther Furth while Bayern’s last match was a comfortable 4-0 victory over Union Berlin.
Freiburg’s rock solid defense has been the catalyst for their charge for European qualification this season. Behind Bayern Munich’s 28 goals conceded, Freiburg have the league’s second best defensive record having only conceded 29 goals. The Breisgau-Brasilianer will need to be at their absolute best today if they want to limit a Bayern Munich team that is on a ridiculous 73 consecutive Bundesliga match scoring streak. It’s hard to bet against the giants from Munich and they rightly come into this match as strong favorites but Freiburg certainly won’t lie down. The hosts have lost only once in their last 10 matches and are on a six match home unbeaten run. Look for Freiburg to make things tough on the visiting Bayern and while they ultimately may not have enough to get a result against the league leaders, they should be able to do enough to frustrate them and keep this one low scoring.
