Eighth seeded Andrey Rublev has reached three US Open quarter finals. You might think a second round match against a player who was ranked 323rd at the start of the month would be a stroll in the park. However, his opponent is Gael Monfils who has showed some good form in recent hard court tournaments and is now up to 136th in the live rankings. Monfils has lost three quarter finals at the US Open and in 2016 got to the last four. The 36-year-old hasn't played a great deal on the ATP Tour this year. He has played four recent hard court tournaments though and reached the last eight in Toronto where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas. The first round saw him beat qualifier Taro Daniel in four sets after losing the first.
Andrey Rublev has reached the last eight in the US Open on three previous occasions and did so last year. Rublev has played in eight Grand Slam quarter finals, including five in the past three years but he's never won one. This year he's reached that stage at in both the Australian Open and at Wimbledon. Rublev had a comfortable first round win and didn't drop a set against lucky loser Arthur Cazaux. If he wins this match then another unseeded player will be met in the last 32, namely Matteo Berrettini or Arthur Rinderknech. He was glad to win that first round match as he'd lost his previous three matches. He's reached one hard court final this year, losing the title decider in Dubai to Daniil Medvedev. This is a potentially tricky match but we feel Rublev can get the win.
