Cameroon had to sweat it out to beat debutants Comoros in their last game, and here they face another first timer in the shape of Gambia as the 2021 AFCON enters the quarter finals stage. Gambia have so far done well, considering this is their first ever appearance at AFCON; they’ve already beaten Tunisia and Guinea in this competition and drawn with Mali. In the Round of 16, Gambia beat Guinea 1-0 despite having Yusupha Njie sent off late on. They rode their luck at some point in the game but managed to hold off their much superior opponents. Here it will be tougher and the fact that Gambia haven’t been scoring a lot of goals will not help. In the last 10 matches, they have scored more than a goal in just one game. At AFCON, they have scored once in each of their four matches so far, and have conceded just one goal – in the 1-1 draw with Mali.
Cameroon braced tough moments in their last game, beating Comoros 2-1 in an eventful game. A stampede at the stadium was enough to dampen the mood in a game that saw Comoros, ravaged by Covid, field an understrength side. Cameroon had to face a side with a makeshift goalkeeper and it was worse for Comoros when their skipper was sent off in the seventh minute. Still Cameroon struggled to break down the AFCON debutants and even had to endure a nervy ending as they finished 2-1 winners. Against Gambia it is another test against an underdog and Cameroon need to be at their best, especially in terms of coordination in attack. Unbeaten in their last eight matches, Cameroon are definitely the favorites here, and backed by the home crowd, they should do well. Cameroon have scored two or more goals in three of their four matches at this competition so far.
Gambia have already overachieved, reaching this stage on their first AFCON appearance. This is going to be their toughest test yet and facing the hosts makes it even harder. They have had a good ride but they don’t score a lot and that may be their main undoing here. We are backing Cameroon to carry the day here.
