Germany recovered from their horror start to the Olympic Games by beating Saudi Arabia U23 in their second game in Group D and will be faced with a must win situation when they take on Ivory Coast in the final group game. These two sides have contrasting fortunes heading to this game with Ivory Coast set to progress only by avoiding defeat. Germany opened their campaign with a 4-2 loss to Brazil before beating Saudi Arabia 3-2. In each of their matches so far, Germany have had a player sent off and going to this one, they will miss Amos Pieper, who was shown a straight red in the Saudi Arabia game. Nadiem Amiri and Ragnar Ache have been the leading stars for Germany U23, the two scoring in both matches and will be hoping to extend this run against the African representatives.
Ivory Coast managed to hold off Brazil in their last game, and they were impressive especially defensively. After that 0-0 draw, they need just a draw to progress to the next stage but they will miss midfielder Eboue Kouassi, who was sent off late against Brazil. He was the second of Ivory Coast players to be sent off, after Aboubacar Doumbia in the first leg. So, somehow, both sides will miss key men in this game. Ivory Coast have conceded just one goal in this competition but with Germany in a must-win state, the Small Elephants must be at their best defensively. They have one clean sheet in four matches and this may raise questions over their ability to stop Germany.
Ivory Coast played for more than half of their match with Brazil, against 10 men after Douglas Luiz was sent off, but they still failed to kill it off. There will be serious questions about their capabilities, and meeting a Germany side with much better players will call for a lot from the Ivorians. We expect that in Germany’s defensive form Ivory Coast will be able to score, but Germany have better players and experience and we’ll be going for them to win.
