The Euro 2024 finals are here, and hosts Germany will start off with a game against Scotland in Group A. For the Germans, this is an opportunity to redeem their fading image since winning the 2014 World Cup. Things have been looking up for them lately and manager Julian Nagelsmann will want to tap into that. They are coming here unbeaten in four warm-up matches in the run-up to the competition. Germany rose from a 0-0 draw with Ukraine to beat Greece 2-1 in their final friendly match before switching to the Euros. They have three wins in the last four matches, scoring twice in three while keeping two clean sheets. The ghost of their early exits in two of the last three major tournaments will continue to haunt Germany ahead of this game. However, losing just twice in their last nine matches should give them the needed confidence. The other worry for the hosts will be the fact that they have just two clean sheets in their last 14 matches.
Scotland are making a second straight Euro appearance and will be seeking a first win in five meetings against Germany. Their Euro record isn’t great either and that will make this a very tough start for them. In a group that also has Switzerland and Hungary, there’s no room for a slow start. The only time Scotland met Germany at the Euros was in 1992, a game they lost 2-0. Coming into the competition, it hasn’t been great for the Scots. They’ve won just once in the last nine matches – against minnows Gibraltar. Five times in those nine matches, Scotland suffered defeats but they only failed to score in three of their last 15 matches. Right ahead of this fixture, Scotland blew a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Finland in their final friendly match. That result marked the sixth time in nine matches that they conceded more than a goal.
It has been a slow recovery for Germany but they appear to be rediscovering their form at the right time. They definitely have to deal with the pressure but coming here on a four-game unbeaten run helps. Playing at home, and against a nation they’ve rarely struggled against should also work in their favor. However, Scotland carry an attacking threat and this could pose some problems for Germany, who aren’t the best defensively. Our prediction for Germany v Scotland is for Germany to win and both teams to score.
