Gambia’s fairytale at the 2021 AFCON continues as they take on Guinea in the last 16. This is Gambia first ever appearance at the AFCON finals and they surprise all by garnering seven points in Group F. Guinea could only managed four points and finished second in Group B. They are winless in their last two matches and heading to this game they lost 2-1 to Zimbabwe. In their last five matches, Guinea have three clean sheets and two wins. Those two wins are actually all they have in the last 11 matches, and they haven’t scored a lot, only managing more than a goal in two of their last 10 games. Six of Guinea’s last 10 matches have produced under 2.5 goals
Gambia will want to push on with this as much as possible, being under no pressure, having already achieved their expectations. Right before this game, the debutants beat former AFCON winners Tunisia 1-0. Earlier they have beaten Mauritania 1-0 and drawn 1-1 with Mali. They will be confident here, but their matches haven’t come with a lot of goals either. In the last six matches, Gambia haven’t scored more than a goal. None of their last nine matches have produced over 2.5 goals and one of their qualities that have come out at the AFCON 2021, is the ability to defend in numbers especially when needed to protect their lead. Before this game, these two nations had met in 2007, during the 2008 AFCON qualifiers. Guinea won 2-0 then before the two drew 2-2 in the return leg.
Gambia have been the surprise package in this competition and they will want to take this as far as they can. They are however, not the strongest in attack and most of their matches have been low-scoring. The same has also been the case with Guinea and we are backing this to produce under 2.5 goals.
