One of the marquee matchups for the round of 16 in the DFB Pokal sees a Berlin Derby as Hertha and Union face off at the Olympiastadion. Hertha Berlin, who will be classified as the home team as the match is taking place at their ground, will be hoping to salvage their disappointing performance in the league with a deep run in the cup. Die Alte Dame are currently 13th in the Bundesliga with 22 points and if they are not careful, could find themselves involved in a relegation battle. Hertha have a four point lead over 16th place Arminia. Their opponents today will be a Union Berlin side who have built on their strong seventh place finish last season and now occupy a European qualification spot as they sit fifth in the table. They are amazingly challenging for a Champions League spot with fellow upstarts Hoffenheim, who they equal on 31 points but trail on goal differential.
Union have been in the better form of the two sides, winning their last match 2-1 against Hoffenheim and pushing their unbeaten run to four matches. Hertha have been struggling for consistency all season and followed up a fantastic 3-2 home win vs Dortmund with a 3-1 loss to Cologne and a 0-0 draw to Wolfsburg. Hertha will lean on their dramatically improved home form to carry them through here as they hold a home record of 4-2-3 compared to 2-2-6 away. Union, similarly, have been a strong home side winning six of their 10 matches compared to their stuttering away form where they have only won two of nine. This should be a very competitive match and the pre match 1X2 odds reflect that, with the two sides coming in at nearly the same price.
We’re going to back goals in this one with both teams to score as the bet. It’s a very reasonable price for teams that strongly trend towards goals given their respective home and away form. This should be an entertaining, competitive match in the capital between two local rivals.
