Liverpool take on Brentford at Anfield for matchday 22 of the Premier League on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp’s side has wobbled a bit in the league, now failing to win in their last three Premier League matches, and have seen Manchester City open up an 11 point lead at the top of the table. The hosts currently sit third with 42 points, trailing second place Chelsea by just one point although the Reds have a game in hand. Liverpool’s last match was a 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal in the EFL cup, a disappointing result given the Gunners were reduced to 10 men just 24 minutes into the match. The visitors have had a very respectable return to the English top flight, their first since 1947, and look set for a mid table finish. Brentford currently sit 13th with 23 points and have built a comfortable 12 point lead over 18th place Burnley. Their last match was a heavy 4-1 away loss to Southampton and Thomas Frank’s side will be hoping they don’t suffer a similar result on this trip.
The Africa Cup of Nations has taken two of Liverpool’s cornerstone attacking pieces in Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. However, Jurgen Klopp still has the likes of Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Takumi Minamino to call upon. Liverpool should see themselves taking the three points in this match and it’s likely that they will want to come out of the blocks quickly after being held scoreless on Thursday. Liverpool have one of the stronger halftime records in the league, especially at home where they have been leading six times, drawing three and have yet to trail going into the break. Brentford on the other hand have struggled to start matches quickly and have a halftime record of four wins, six draws and 10 defeats. Look for the hosts to come out quickly in this one, leading at halftime and eventually taking all three points.
We’re going to back Liverpool to be leading at halftime and full time in this match. The Reds need a strong response and this is a good opportunity to end their three match league run without a win. Even without their two star attacking players, Liverpool should have more than enough for this Brentford side.
