LAFC have started the season strongly as they look to put last season behind them and regain the form that saw complete one of Major League Soccer’s best ever regular seasons in 2019 when they finished with 72 points. Former USMNT right-back and LAFC manager Steve Cherundolo’s side has so far recorded wins over Colorado and Inter Miami while drawing 1-1 with Portland and find themselves atop the Western Conference with seven points and a +5 goal differential. LAFC fans will hope the strong defensive start which has seen the team record two clean sheets from their first three matches can continue after the club finished last season in the bottom half of all MLS teams in terms of goals conceded. LAFC will be expecting Brian Rodriguez to make the leap this season and fill the massive shoes left by Diego Rossi’s departure in 2021.
On the other side, their opponents Vancouver have not enjoyed the same type of start to the season. The Whitecaps have failed to record a victory over their first three matches, losing twice and only managing to find the net once. A disappointing start for a team that closed out last season strong, this was certainly not the start that manager Marc De Santos had in mind and his side will look to bounce back against an LAFC team that they have had success against recently. Vancouver are unbeaten against Los Angeles in their last four consecutive meetings, winning two. However, if LAFC can recapture the form that saw them dominating the MLS a few seasons ago then we could see a repeat of the back to back six goal thumpings they delivered to the Whitecaps in 2019.
