Luxembourg and Northern Ireland square off this Friday for a friendly match between two sides that have already seen their 2022 World Cup dreams dashed. Neither team was realistically going to stand much of a chance of booking their ticket to Qatar, Luxembourg has never qualified for a major tournament in their 88 years of participation while Northern Ireland has only reached the world’s most popular competition on three occasions, with their last appearance in Mexico’s 1986 edition. Northern Ireland finished third in their group behind winners Switzerland and second place Italy with a total of nine points and a record of 2-3-3. Luxembourg didn’t fare much better in their qualifying group, finishing second from bottom in fourth place with eight points from a 3-0-5 record.
Northern Ireland should be coming into this match with a good bit of confidence after good performances in their last two matches. The Green and White Army defeated Lithuania 1-0 at home in a well-deserved victory and followed that up by holding the defending European champions Italy to a 0-0 draw. Ian Barclough’s side had been tough to break down during their qualifying campaign, conceding only seven goals in their eight matches. It was on the offensive side that caused them problems and they only managed six total goals in the qualifying campaign. Luxembourg on the other hand, have certainly not been as impressive defensively as their opponents today. The Red Lions tied with last place Azerbaijan for the most goals conceded in the group at 18 with two of their three victories coming over the bottom placed side. A 1-0 smash and grab victory away against Ireland in a match that they were thoroughly outplayed makes Luxembourg’s qualifying record look better than their play would have dictated.
