Manchester City's 21 game winning streak came to an end on Sunday. They still top the table and can get back into winning ways with a home victory over 14th placed Southampton. City went 1-0 down to Manchester United in the first minute. They could never get back on level terms and conceded another goal in the second half. City had won 15 Premier League games in a row and the first of those wins was at Southampton the week before Christmas. Perhaps they just don't play well against United, having drawn 0-0 at Old Trafford earlier in the season. The loss on Sunday ended a run of eight consecutive home league wins. This is an ideal opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to 14 points. They also play before their main rivals at the weekend so could be 17 clear if winning at Fulham on Saturday.
Southampton won 2-0 at bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United on Saturday. That took them seven points clear of the relegation zone and this is their game in hand. Not the most ideal game in hand to have though is it? Their previous nine league games had only produced one point. Hopefully, they will have a slightly better result than their previous trip to Manchester when losing 9-0 to United. It was an important victory at Sheffield United at the weekend, especially with Fulham winning the following day. The one bit of bad news for them was the loss to injury again of striker Danny Ings. Southampton have a decent fixture list after this game with home matches against Brighton, Burnley and Crystal Palace and a trip to West Brom. City can win this match leading at both half and full time but the Saints should be able to battle themselves away from relegation troubles and are still in the FA Cup.
