A matchup between third and fourth in the league table is set to kick off in the Venezuelan Primera Division when Monagas Sport Club hosts Deportivo Tachira at the Estadio Monumental de Maturin for matchday 17. The defending champions Tachira come into this match off the back of two wins from their last three matches with the most recent a 2-0 home win over Aragua. The Aurinegro have been in good form since ending their Copa Libertadores group in third place, resulting in missing out on the next phase but qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana knockout stages in the process. They’ll have the opportunity to focus all of their attention again on their domestic league for the next two fixtures before a meeting with famous Brazilian side Santos in two weeks time. Their opponents come into this match on a three game losing skid and a run of four matches without a win, an extremely disappointing stretch given Monagas’ strong start to the season.
Monagas has worryingly been held scoreless in their last two outings after previously looking unstoppable on the attacking side of the ball. Despite the goals drying up in recent outings, the Guerreros de Guarapiche still lead the league in goals scored with 28 and have managed to find the net in six of their seven home matches. This looks a decent spot for a strong bounce back performance from the hosts as two of their three losses on the current slide have come away from home. Monagas are a solid 4-1-2 at home and will fancy their chances against a Tachira side that has looked vulnerable when playing as the visitors. The champions have already lost four of their eight away matches and have lost back-to-back matches on the road. With the revenge factor on the side of the hosts after losing 4-2 away to Tachira less than three weeks ago, this looks to be a good spot to back Monagas to bounce back with three points.
