Nigeria put up an energetic show to sink AFCON 2021 favorites Egypt in their first Group D game, and will be eying the same when they take on Sudan on Match Day 2. Going to this game, Nigeria top the group with three points and second placed Sudan have one. Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal of the game as Nigeria beat Egypt 1-0, and another win here will guarantee the West Africans a place in the second round. Nigeria’s win over Egypt was the fourth straight unbeaten outing, and they have kept three clean sheets in that run. They have failed to score in just one of their last five matches but at the AFCON finals, Nigeria have eight wins in the last 10 matches.
Sudan had a dismal showing at the Arab Cup in December and will be looking to do better at the AFCON finals. They didn’t have the best start, however, playing to a 0-0 draw with Guinea Bissau. From this point on, the level of hardship goes higher and facing the group leaders will be an uphill task. The draw with Guinea Bissau was a second straight of similar result, having played to a 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe pre-tournament, and it was the fourth time in five matches that they failed to score. Sudan have two goals only in the last five matches, those coming in a friendly loss to Ethiopia. In their last 12 matches, Sudan haven’t managed a win, and in half of their last 10 matches, they’ve conceded two or more goals.
Sudan have conceded two or more goals in five of the last 10 matches.
In the last AFCON finals, Nigeria got to the semi finals and went on to finish third. They will be targeting the final this time and in terms of squad strength they are better this time. They have been good in defence, keeping clean sheets in four of their last five matches, and facing a side weak in attack places them as favorites. Back Nigeria to win, without conceding.
