An international friendly matchup sees Northern Ireland take on Hungary in Belfast as both teams look to tune up for the UEFA National League in the summer. Unfortunately for the two sides, neither will be competing in Qatar in the 2022 World Cup after failing to secure a high enough finish in their respective qualifying groups. Northern Ireland finished third in their five team group, behind winners Switzerland and second place Italy, with a record of 2-3-3 with six goals scored and seven conceded. Hungary were handed a tough group but put forth a good account of themselves, finishing with a record of 5-2-3 with 19 goals scored and 13 conceded. The Hungarians ultimately finished fourth of six in their group but were only three points off second place Poland in what was a very competitive group. Hungary’s last match was a 1-0 defeat at home to Serbia while Northern Ireland are coming off a 3-1 away win against Luxembourg.
The oddsmakers suggest this will be a tightly contested match with very similar odds on offer for both teams. Northern Ireland find themselves ever so slightly favored due to their home field advantage which opens up a nice opportunity to back the visiting Hungary. The visitors are simply the better team and are coming off an impressive qualifying stage despite their ultimate finish in the group. Hungary did not see a noticeable dip in their production when playing away from home, only losing one of their five away matches while posting a surprising +6 goal differential. Recent strong results to close out the group stage such as an away win against Poland, an away draw against England and a comprehensive home win against San Marino should have the visitors spirits flying high and they should be able to carry that over with a result in this one.
