Fifth seeded Ons Jabeur faces the 18th seeded Veronika Kudermetova in the US Open fourth round. Jabeur has reached this stage of the tournament for the first time in her career. To do so, the Tunisian has beaten three Americans, namely Madison Brengle, Elizabeth Mandlik and the 31st seeded Shelby Rogers. The first two of her wins were in straight sets but Jabeur had to come from behind to get a three-set win over Rogers. Jabeur has won two titles this year and lost in the Wimbledon final. Only Iga Swiatek has earned more ranking points than her this year and in the live WTA rankings, she's up to third and a couple more wins in New York can take her into second.
Veronika Kudermetova is ranked 18th in the world but up to 12th in the live rankings. The Russian is attempting to reach a Grand Slam quarter final for the second event in a row, having made the last eight at Roland Garros. Her form in New York has been a major disappointment until this year. Five previous visits have seen two failed attempts to make the main draw and then three successive first round exits. That's changed this year though with wins over Donna Vekic, Maryna Zanevska and Dalma Galfil, so not the hardest of routes. Leading up to this tournament, Kudermetova made it to the last four of the Silcon Valley Classic and beat Jabeur in that event. The 25-year-old then lost to Ajla Tomljanovic in both Toronto and Cincinnati. If winning this match she'll take on either Tomljanoviv or Liudmila Samsonova in the last eight. There have been three previous meetings between the pair and Kudermetova has won all of them. The first two wins came in 2019 though back then Jabeur wasn't ranked in the top 50. This may well go to three sets but Jabeur looks to be in the better form.
