North Macedonia are only one game away from reaching their first World Cup finals. They travel to Portugal looking to cause another major upset. After a win in Germany during the group stages, North Macedonia got a late goal to win 1-0 away at European champions Italy in their play-off semi-final. They finished second in their group, pipping third placed Romania by a single point. North Macedonia qualfied for the European Championship finals held last year. They had a nightmare campaign though, losing all three of their group matches. Since then though, they have played eight games with their only loss being a 4-0 home defeat by Germany. Their last three away matches have all been won and with clean sheets.
Portugal last failed to reach the World Cup finals in 1998 and reached the last 16 in 2018. They really should have won their qualifying group but only managed a point from their last two games. Their final match was at home to Serbia and despite taking an early lead, lost 2-1 and finished second in their group. That took them into a play-off semi-final at home to Turkey and they comfortably won that 3-1. Portugal have a strong home record in World Cup qualifiers. The loss to Serbia was their first since being beaten by Denmark in 2008. North Macedonia's confidence should be sky-high after the win in Italy but Portugal and particularly Ronaldo won't want to miss out on the finals. Go for over 2.5 goals in this game.
