A battle atop Group A in the Copa Libertadores sees first-place Racing Club taking on second-place Flamengo for the third of six matchdays in South America’s premier competition. The Argentenian side got off to the perfect start with two wins from their first two matches following a dramatic 3-2 win over Aucas in their last group stage outing. Racing Club are now on six points and have put themselves in an excellent position to qualify to the knockout stages. While things are going well in this competition, Racing have suffered in the Primera Division. They are sitting 14th in the table with only five wins to their name and less than half of the first phase of the season remaining. La Academia are coming off back-to-back losses after a 3-1 away defeat to Boca Juniors on Saturday. They’ve now conceded six goals in their last two matches alone and have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six consecutive matches.
Flamengo experienced a disappointing opening match in the 2023 Copa Libertadores group stage after falling to a 2-1 away defeat to Aucas despite taking an early lead. Mengão were able to respond in the second group stage fixture by easing to a 2-0 home victory over Ñublense thanks to two first half Pedro goals. Flamengo haven’t experienced the best of starts to the new season after losing two of their opening three Brasileiro Serie A matches, the most recent of which was a 3-2 home loss to Botafogo on Sunday. However, the visitors did blast eight goals past Maringa in the Copa do Brasil just one week ago and have been in strong goal scoring form overall; it’s on the defensive end where they have struggled. This looks to be a highly-entertaining fixture for a number of reasons. Argentina vs Brazil club matches are always hotly-contested affairs and with the pedigree of both teams and the overall attacking form of the two clubs, we could be in for goals in this one. Flamengo have shown no trouble at all in finding the net with 10 goals scored in their last two outings. Where they have struggled, similarly to their opponents, has been on the defensive end. Both Racing and Flamengo are on an extended streak of failing to keep a clean sheet and we’re going to bet on that happening again when they meet in Avellaneda.
