La Liga sides head to Saudi Arabia this week for the Spanish Super Cup. Real Madrid take on Atletico Madrid in this semi-final with the winners up against either Barcelona or Osasuna. Real qualified for this competition by winning the Copa del Rey last season. Atletico are here because of their third place finish in La Liga last season. Real Madrid lost in the final of the Spanish Super Cup last season being beaten by Barcelona. They come into this season's competition top of La Liga, ahead of Girona on head-to-head results. Their most recent game saw them win 3-1 at Arandina in the Copa del Rey. That was their fifth win in a row and they have gone 19 games without a loss since being beaten at Atletico in late September.
That was on home soil for Atletico and that's far better than their recent away form. They won at Lugo in the Copa del Rey but before that had been beaten 4-3 in La Liga by Girona. That defeat has left them down in fifth place in La Liga. Atletico had lost three of their last four away fixtures before that cup win and will need to improve to have a chance of making it to their first Spanish Super Cup final since the 2019-20 season, the first one where this four-team format was used. We go for Real Madrid to continue their good form and reach the final.
