The biggest game in the Italian Serie A this weekend will be the Rome derby; AS Roma plays host to SS Lazio at the Olympic Stadium with both sides having posted mixed results in their recent games. Roma have so far managed 48 points and are placed seventh while fifth placed Lazio are ahead by just a point. A win here could see Roma leap to fifth in the league standings and coming from a hard fought Europa Conference League game, Jose Mourinho will hope his charges can cope. Roma are coming from a 1-1 draw with Vitesse; they were on the brink, until Tammy Abraham, arguably their best player this season, tucked in the equaliser that saw them progress to the next round. This was their second 1-1 draw and seventh unbeaten game. They have lost just once in the last 10 games but registered only three wins in the process. Each of their last five matches has ended in under 2.5 goals with Roma failing to score more than a goal.
Lazio did not have a midweek game, following their elimination from the Europa League by Porto earlier on. They will be well rested and fully recovered after their 1-0 win over Venezia. With two straight wins, they will go into this game with some sort of momentum, though these came against struggling sides. Before the win over Venezia, Lazio had beaten Cagliari 3-0 away from home, and while this will be a tougher game than those two, the visitors will hope the wins give them the needed push. Lazio haven’t lost a lot to Roma in their recent meetings; out of the last six meetings, they have suffered just one loss and won three. One thing though about this derby, is that results favour the team playing at home. The away team hasn’t won in nine meetings and in the last 12, only Lazio have managed a win, playing as the away side.
Roma are coming from a midweek game and will want to build on the momentum they have established here. Playing at home should favour them too, though Lazio are also building some momentum, having won their last two games. The visitors will know this game rarely favours the away side, but they have a good run against Roma, which is something to bank on. With these teams’ recent runs, a draw seems the likeliest here.
