=11ptThe Europa Conference League debut season continues in the round of 16 return leg when AS Roma look to close out the tie against Dutch side Vitesse at the Stadio Olimpico. The Giallorossi return home with a significant advantage of a 1-0 aggregate lead after holding on for the win in the first leg despite being reduced to 10 men in the second half. Roma have been on a fairly good run of form, winning three and drawing two of their last five, and are coming off a 1-1 draw against Udinese in their previous match. Jose Mourinho’s side currently sit seventh in the league table with 48 points even on points with Atalanta and trailing Lazio by one point for a Europa League qualification spot. Their opponents, Vitesse, sit sixth in the Eredivisie with 41 points and are some way off the top three. Their last match was a 0-0 draw against Hercules and it’s now been two consecutive matches with Vitesse failing to find the net.
=11ptThe visiting Vitesse will feel extremely hard done by the first leg result as Thomas Letsch’s side played quite well. The Dutch side controlled 61% of the possession and were able to create five clear cut chances to Roma’s one. Ultimately they were let down by their finishing and must be looking at that match as a huge missed opportunity. Roma come into the return leg as favorites, which is to be expected given their strong home form this season. The hosts boast one of the Serie A’s best home defensive records, keeping a league high eight clean sheets at the Stadio Olimpico while conceding just 14 goals in 15 matches. Vitesse, to their credit, have been impressive away from home in the Eredivisie and have compiled the league’s fifth best away record at 7-3-3 with their sturdy defense a big reason for their success. With Mourinho always prioritizing a solid defense, especially when playing at home, and Roma looking to protect a one goal aggregate lead, this match has all the makings of a low scoring affair.
