Scotland will step up for their second match at Euro 2024 against Switzerland, hoping to avoid a second straight defeat. Heading into this encounter, Switzerland are second while Scotland are bottom in Group A. Scotland had a nightmare start to the competition, suffering a 5-1 loss to the hosts, Germany. They will consider this a more manageable game as they throw their all for three points. History may favor Scotland, having won eight of the 16 meetings between the two nations and lost five. Their only meeting at the Euro finals was in 1996, which Scotland also won, but that is confined to history now. The reality on paper is that the Scots have struggled in recent months, and come here on just one win in 10 matches. That win happens to be against low-ranking Gibraltar in a friendly game. Their good run that saw them finish just below Spain in the qualifiers is now forgotten and they have their backs against the wall.
The Swiss will without a doubt be the favorites here. Their 3-1 win over Hungary in the opening game sent a statement and they’ll be gunning for an additional three points here. That win marked a fifth undefeated outing for Switzerland and their third win in four matches. Barnabas Varga’s goal however exposed Switzerland’s continuous defensive struggles, and gave them some discomfort. It took Breel Embolo’s late goal to calm the Swiss’ nerves and they will want to do better here. With just one loss in their last 15 matches, Switzerland will have the right to feel as favorites here. However, seven draws in the last 12 matches point to a side that may lack game management at crucial times. This is true especially when you put in mind that they have just three clean sheets in 13 matches. They do have just two clean sheets in their last 10 European Championship matches but failed to score in only two of the 10.
Scotland’s last win in the European Championship was against Switzerland; that was back in 1996. They’ve played only four games after that, and won none. Coming into this game on the back of a heavy defeat makes them clear underdogs. Meanwhile, Switzerland haven't suffered defeat in regular time in their last four Euro games. They also have a better run ahead of this game, which will fuel their confidence. Our prediction for Scotland v Switzerland will be for Switzerland to win.
