For the third straight time, Senegal are set to face Egypt; these two meet in Dakar to battle for one of the five tickets to Qatar 2022 from Africa. Last week the two faced off in Cairo and Egypt won 1-0, a result Senegal has to overturn in order to book a World Cup ticket. Things are tight here as we await a repeat of the 2021 AFCON final, which Senegal won on post match penalties. The loss in Cairo was the first for Senegal in their last 14 matches; three of the last five have ended in low scores, all under 2.5 goals. In their last seven matches against Egypt, Senegal have three wins and one of them ended in a draw - the 2021 AFCON final. Saliou Ciss scored the own goal that gave Egypt a first win over Senegal in the last four meetings. Six of the last seven meetings between these two sides have produced under 2.5 goals.
On paper, Egypt are unbeaten in their last five matches, with two wins and three draws but they did lose on post match penalties to Senegal at AFCON. They haven’t also been scoring a lot of goals, despite having one of the best forwards in the world in Mo Salah. They have scored more than a goal in just one of the last five matches and as a result four of their last five matches have produced under 2.5 goals. In World Cup qualifiers, Egypt have a fine run ahead of this game, one thing they will hope works out for them. They have no loss in the last 10 matches - winning seven and scoring in each one of them. Heading to Senegal, they need just a draw and they will book their slot at the World Cup. Away from home in World Cup qualification, Egypt have just one win in the last five and here we expect them to employ a defensive approach to try and hold on to their slim lead in the tie.
Senegal have all to do here, after their 1-0 loss away in Cairo. They have dominated Egypt in recent matches but here they know they can’t afford any slip ups. Egypt are on a revenge mission and it is halfway done after their home win. These two have however not been scoring a lot and we will back this to produce under 2.5 goals.
