For the first time since the 2010 World Cup semi-finals, Spain and Germany will meet in the knockouts of a major tournament. The two giants of Europe are set to go head-to-head in the 2024 European Championship quarter-finals. The winner here will earn the right to play either Portugal or France in the semis. Spain have had a great tournament so far, winning all their four matches. It wasn’t, however, without a big fight in their last outing, as they eliminated minnows Georgia. For the first time in the tournament, they conceded a goal, in the round of 16. Robin Le Normand’s own goal had Spain chasing the game but they gave a great response on their way to a 4-1 win. That was Spain’s seventh undefeated outing and here they’ll be targeting a seventh straight win. In their last six matches, Spain kept four clean sheets. They are unbeaten in four matches against Germany, three being draws.
Germany have suffered at the hands of Spain in recent meetings, only winning once in their last eight matches. The most humiliating of them was the 6-0 defeat in 2020 in the Nations League. Most recently, they met at the 2022 World Cup and drew 1-1. Germany will come here keen to end this poor run, and playing at home should favor them. At this tournament, the Germans haven't had a run as perfect as Spain’s but they remain a force to reckon with. A short stoppage to their round of 16 game against Denmark didn’t dampen their spirits as they went on to win 2-0. The impressive Jamal Musiala scored his third goal of the tournament adding to Kai Havertz’s penalty to seal the win. This marked Germany’s eighth unbeaten outing, a run they will be keen to extend in this game. If they avoid defeat here, Germany will match their performance at Euro 2016, when they went undefeated in their first five matches.
As far as Euro 2024 is concerned, Spain come into this game on a perfect run, and have conceded just once in the tournament. This will however be the biggest test of their good run in the competition and a threat to their six-game winning run. They haven't lost to Germany in the last four meetings, though three ended in draws. Germany have also had a good tournament and will want to leverage on home support. Like Spain, this will also be their toughest match. Our prediction for Spain v Germany is for the teams to draw at 90 minutes.
