Spain hosts Iceland at the Riazor stadium in La Coruña as both sides will be looking to gain some momentum with the UEFA Nations league fast approaching in the summer. The Spanish national team will have the added motivation of tuning up for the World Cup in Qatar as La Roja booked their place after a first place finish in their qualifying group, finishing with a record of 6-1-1. Despite winning their group, the Spaniards haven’t been in the best of form since the end of the European Championships last summer. They needed a 90th minute goal to squeak by Albania 2-1 in their most recent match and have only had one match in the last eight where they managed to score more than two goals. Fortunately for them, their opponents Iceland have been suffering a torrid run of form and have only registered one win in their last 11 matches. Iceland’s last match was a 1-1 draw away from home against Finland.
Spain should be viewing this as a good opportunity to rediscover their scoring touch against an Iceland team that has been leaking goals. Iceland have been vulnerable, conceding five to South Korea, four to Germany and three to North Macedonia all within the last eight matches. While Spain have historically opted more for a possession control style of play rather than a more ruthless cutting edge style, they should have more than enough to notch a couple of goals here and record a comfortable win. The hosts should be able to keep their opponents off the score sheet here, as Spain has only conceded five goals in their eight qualifying matches and only two when playing on home soil. With a three match winning streak and only one goal conceded in their last three, Iceland will find it tough to get a result here.
