Ninth seeded Taylor Fritz faces the second seed Novak Djokovic in the US Open quarter finals. The winner will take on either Frances Tiafoe (the tenth seed) or unseeded Ben Shelton. A win for Fritz will guarantee us an American in the final but that's easier written than achieved. Fritz has a terrible record against Djokovic, having lost all of their seven previous meetings. Only in the 2021 Australian Open dId Fritz win a set and he won't want to remember their most recent match. That was in Cincinnati last month with the American only winning four games, all in the second set. He's up to eighth in the live rankings and has reached the last eight of the US Open without dropping a set. It's not been the hardest of routes though with two qualifiers and a wild card being faced.
Novak Djokovic is already assured of regaining the world number one spot in the next rankings list. He's bidding to reach his 12th US Open semi-final and adding to his three titles won at Flushing Meadows. He has a 42-5 record this year and has won five titles this year, including two Grand Slams. He's reached the final in each of the Grand Slam events held this year. After beating Fritz in Cincinnati, he went on to win that title. There's been one big scare in this US Open when he lost the first two sets to Laslo Djere in round three. Her recovered to win that match, only dropping five games in the next three sets. That was followed by a straight sets victory over Borna Gojo. We go for him to beat Fritz without dropping a set.
