The North London derby will mark the biggest fixture in the Premier League when action returns after the international break. Tottenham Hotspur will host Arsenal in the first instalment of this derby on Sunday. Here’s our prediction for the match.
The hosts have not really excelled in recent matches against Arsenal. In the last seven North London derbies, Spurs have returned just one win. The last time these rivals faced off, Tottenham’s fightback fell short as they came from 3-0 down to lose 3-2 at this same venue.
That was their third defeat in four meetings with Arsenal and they are also coming from a loss. Ange Postecoglou’s team’s tough start to the season culminated in a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United before heading to the break.
Arsenal will also be looking to return to winning ways in this game. They missed the chance to go top after a 1-1 draw with Brighton in their last match. In that result, the Gunners also lost their perfect start and conceded for the first time this season.
Having registered five wins in seven meetings with Tottenham, Arsenal will be confident of bagging the three points on offer here. They will, however, be concerned that even in their defensive strength, they conceded four times against Spurs last season.
In their last 14 meetings with Tottenham, Mikel Arteta’s side kept just one clean sheet. Undefeated in their last nine league matches, they will be keen not to lose that run here. Away from home in the league, Arsenal haven't tasted defeat in 10 outings.
Arsenal are famed for their defensive prowess in recent months but this is a fixture that disobeys all aspects of that. Last season, they conceded four times in the two meetings with Spurs and we can’t bet on a clean sheet for them here.
At the same time, Tottenham have their own defensive worries, which could be more exposed by this Arsenal side. Goals on either side is a stat to always expect in this game. Our prediction for Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal is for both teams to score.
