Mali’s quest for a first ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup is at risk as they head to Tunisia for the return leg of their third round qualification tie. Tunisia lead 1-0 going into this game courtesy of a Moussa Sissako own goal that handed them their third win in five matches. The Carthage Eagles have however not been very clinical in front of goal, scoring more than a goal in just two of their last 10 matches. Each of their last four matches has produced under 2.5 goals. Tunisia have been at the World Cup on five different occasions, the most recent in Russia 2018. They thus have a good run in qualifiers and going into this one, they have just one loss in their last 15, with 11 wins therein. In their last eight World Cup qualification matches, they’ve managed six clean sheets. At home in these qualifiers, they haven’t lost in the last 16, winning 13 of them and keeping 11 clean sheets.
Mali have to do better here; they played the final 55 minutes of the first leg a man down and will be hoping it doesn’t occur again. For this game they will be without Moussa Sissako, the man who scored an own goal and got sent off four minutes later in the first leg. Still, they managed to hold their own and pushed for an equaliser to the last minute and the impression they left was of a capable team. They will be looking to upset Tunisia’s fine run at home, though they have the same challenge as Tunisia in attack - low scoring. In the last six matches, Mali have managed more than a goal in one game; they’ve failed to score in their last two matches and each of their last six games has produced under 2.5 goals. Mali have suffered just one loss in their last 10 matches in World Cup qualification but most of the teams they’ve faced in this period aren’t as strong as Tunisia. Away from home in World Cup qualification, they’ve failed to score in three of five.
Tunisia have a good run at home in World Cup qualification and they will hope they can finish this off. They should however be wary of this Mali side especially after their push when with a man down in the first leg. This game could go either way but one thing looks certain - that it will be a low scoring game. Go for under 2.5 goals.
