Turkey resume their international sojourn after a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign as they host Montenegro in a Group G clash of the FIFA World Cup 2022 European qualifiers. Turkey are placed on top of the table with two wins and a draw while Montenegro find themselves third with two wins and a loss. Senol Gunes’ side failed to make their mark in the recently concluded European Championships. The Crescent-Stars lost three games in a row. However, keeping aside a dismal continental run, Turkey have been on phenomenal form in other international fixtures. Turkey won 4-2 and 3-0 over Netherlands and Norway respectively followed by a 3-3 draw with Latvia in the World Cup qualifiers. They have not lost a single game across all competitions on eight straight occasions barring the Euro debacle. Burak Yilmaz is the nation’s top scorer with four goals in the qualifiers. Turkey have been scoring goals at will in the qualifiers as they have netted ten goals in just three fixtures, which is also the third-highest number of goals scored across all the ten qualifying groups.
Montenegro come into the game with a 3-1 loss to Israel in an international friendly a couple of months back. Miodrag Radulovic's side started their qualifying campaign with wins over Latvia and Gibraltar with 2-1 and 4-1 scores respectively before succumbing to a 1-0 loss to Norway. They are unbeaten in their last five away games. Montenegro are also wineless for three consecutive fixtures across all competitions and have only managed to score a single goal in those three games. The dip in form can be credited to their defensive issues as they have managed to keep just a single clean sheet in their last five international outings.
