Uruguay’s opening game of the Copa America tournament saw them lose 1-0 to Argentina in the Brazilian capital. They now head to the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba hoping to get on the board. Their opponents this time around will be Chile who are locked at the top of Group A with four points from their first two games after they followed up an opening day 0-0 draw with Argentina by beating Bolivia 1-0 on Friday. With only two teams being eliminated at the group stage Uruguay should still have a good chance of progressing but two defeats from their opening two matches won’t be what manager Oscar Tabarez will want.
Uruguay last won this competition back in 2011 and with this being the first edition since 1991 to feature just ten teams, they should have a chance of at least reaching the knockout stages. Uruguay though, have now failed to score in each of their last four games and won just one of their last six matches since October 2020. They did beat Chile when these sides met last Autumn as they won 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier but strikers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez have scored just one goal each from open play since, so they need them firing.
Chile fought valiantly to earn a point against Argentina in the week as their campaign began and they took all three points, as expected, as they defeated Bolivia 1-0 on Friday. Chile have a chance to go top of the group with a win in this game as they look to ensure the easiest possible route through the knockout phase. Chile had drawn three games in succession prior to their win over Bolivia but they are now unbeaten in five matches and have lost just one of their last eight fixtures in all competitions.
